A Crab by Any Other Name

In a bid to uplift a struggling post-Brexit export economy and make the consumption of crabs more appealing - industry groups have proposed a rebrand of the spider crab.

By renaming the spider crab the ‘Cornish King Crab’ - it is hoped that commercial interest in the crab will grow.

Before Brexit, up to 85% of Britain’s crab stocks were exported, but with trade chains under question there has been pressure to build the UK’s internal market.

The Cornish Fish Producers Organisation believe that this rebrand will make the crab more appetising to a local market - but who knows?

We still prefer its scientific name Maja squinado as it more accurately separates this species from others.
