Chitin, the wonder material

CHITOSAN.jpg

Chitosan, as we have previously posted about, is an exciting new material derived from the shells of crustaceans like crabs and shrimp.

It has a wide range of applications but has most recently been found by researcher Tran Van Son at Hanoi University to filter 95% of antibiotics in wastewater.

The run-off from hospitals, pharmaceutical factories and livestock have serious implications for the growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria is an area of huge concern for human health and run-off into the natural environment plays a large role in this.

Researchers at the university are currently engaging in large tests to add these crab-based filtration systems to hospitals for further tests.
