Facemasks and Crabs

The Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies has estimated that 194 billion disposable masks and gloves are being discarded every month since the pandemic began.

Used and crumpled masks have become a regular sight on streets all around the world. and sadly, many of these masks make their way into the natural environment.

According to the environmental group OceansAsia, 1.6 million masks found their way into the sea last year.

Environmental campaigners have found dead crabs tangled in masks, masks in the stomach of penguins and macaque monkeys chewing on the elasticated straps.

It’s up to us to dispose of them properly and snip the strings before we throw them away.
