Parliament - Protect Crab Rights
After the House of Lords called for amendments to the Animal Welfare Sentience Bill to include invertebrates (animals without backbones) the bill must now be heard again by the House of Commons.
We urge parliamentarians to make the right choice and to support greater protections for decapod crustaceans, alongside octopus and cephalopods (squids).
This judgement by the Lords that crabs, among other animals should be included in the bill is partly down to you, the public. Many people have been instrumental in voicing their concern with how these creatures are treated by humans - and your voices do matter.
@crustacean_compassion have in many respects led the charge to push lawmakers to recognise the sentience of these amazing animals, so well done to these guys.
But the battle for the legality of boiling lobsters alive, or posting live crabs isn’t won yet - despite it being obviously a bad thing.
The House of Commons may still shoot it down perhaps on account of the overly powerful fishing industry lobby, or an environmentally out-of-touch government which cares more about profits than the environment.
But let’s give them the benefit of the doubt for the meanwhile.
