The Pointiest Crab
The Arrow crab, or Stenorhynchus seticornis is one super pointy dude.
It gets its name from its triangular body and exceptionally sticky-outy rostrum, or snout. Forever imaginative, we shaved apes have decided it looks a bit like an arrow.
Much like the Swordfish, this crab probably hasn’t got any concept of what an arrow is, much less why on Earth humans are so obsessed with attacking each other with them.
The Arrow crab lives on reefs in the Western Atlantic, from North Carolina to Brazil. Found on shallow reefs it is an active predator, and will aggressively hunt for food, even attacking, killing and eating small fish.
However its main prey are worms and invertebrates. It’s also nocturnal and rarely seen during daylight.
There have, oddly, been many reports of the crab living in a symbiotic cleaning relationship with larger fish like the Squirrelfish or Moray Eel, which is strange because these animals regularly eat crabs.
Perhaps our friend the Arrow Crab is just too damn pointy?
