We Love Crabs - But Fish are Cool Too

Did you know that some fish are warm blooded? Admittedly not many, in fact, of current species only 0.1% of species of fish.

That’s 35 that we know about. Which has puzzled scientists for a long time.

However a recent study from the British Ecological Society has found that being warm blooded has several distinct evolutionary advantages.

They began their experiment by attaching biologging devices to certain fish. These little computers recorded environmental conditions, speed, depth and helped the scientists paint a picture of these animals and their behaviour.

They found that warm-blooded fish can swim 1.6 times faster than their cold-blooded counterparts. Perhaps down to warm muscles being more effective. This allows them not only to hunt more effectively, but also to cover more ground in search of food.

Sadly, many of these species, like the pictured Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, are endangered and at risk of extinction thanks to either direct human impacts or the warming and acidifying seas, also pretty much our fault.

Oh, and if you were wondering, crabs are cold-blooded.
