Happy Crab Day!

Today is International Crab Day (April 26th) - on this day every year, you are encouraged to find a picture of a crab and post it to your timeline.

There is a ‘National Crab-Meat’ day on the 9th of March, but there is no day dedicated to the living beauty of our crabby friends.

We think that this is wrong, so we’re taking it upon ourselves to promote this grassroots crab movement.

It is time for us to celebrate crabs!

Pictured is the Goneplax Rhomboides, sometimes called the ‘square’ or ‘angular’ crab, despite being more rhomboidal. This particular crab also has a symbiotic relationship with a species of Bryozoa.

Bryozoa are simple aquatic invertebrates often referred to as ‘living moss’. These tiny animals have timed their reproductive cycle with crab molting so that their larvae will pass onto the fresh molt of their host.

*Sadly, International Crab Day hasn’t been formally recognised, but let’s work toward that in the future
